addressbook address lengthes

Some of my users have distribution lists that exceed the 120 char length
for the 'address' field in the table imp_addr (I'm using mysql).  I would
like to increase that limit to allow more addesses per nickname. Can I
just go into mysql and do an "Alter" or is that limit also imposed
somewhere in the php code?  I'm using IMP 2.2.6.

Is there a reason that default size is 120 chars (i.e. am I risking a
small disaster my increasing the field size)?
