I think, the best, i. e. most lucid and versatile, user interface would be: - a set of radio buttons with three alternatives: ?Quote body text?, ?Attach body text?, ?Omit body text?, - plus a checkbox: ?Include attachments?, giving the user choices in two orthogonal dimensions. This comprises all options proposed so far. The checkbox should only be available, if the original mail has any attachments. Likewise, the radio buttons should not be available, if the original message has no body text (or a bodytext consisting of white-space only). In Mimp, the checkbox could be checked, automagically, whenever the user chooses ?Omit body text?. But as with many contracted hyphenated words that become common usage, the hyphen is lost. I'm not sure why "T-shirt" still uses a hyphen; that word is common enough that i'd expect the hyphen to be lost, though i'm not actually sure what, if anything, the "T" represents. I think losing the hyphen in contracted words is a similar process to acronyms that lose their capitalization: MODEM, SCUBA, and RADAR are usually written simply as modem, scuba, and radar. Personally, i prefer "e-mail" with the hyphen. But as long as one is consistent within the same document, it doesn't really matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dan Ramaley Dial Center 118, Drake University Network Programmer/Analyst 2407 Carpenter Ave +1 515 271-4540 Des Moines IA 50311 USA From grahamcw at hurleybulldogs.com Mon Feb 11 15:54:11 2008 From: grahamcw at hurleybulldogs.com (Bill Graham) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 09:54:11 -0600 Subject: [imp] Inbox popup notification - continued In-Reply-To: <20080207141355.44184owr3rdndo6c@newwebmail.hurleybulldogs.com> References: <20080207141355.44184owr3rdndo6c@newwebmail.hurleybulldogs.com> Message-ID: <20080211095411.76486e8ns0a3g04k@newwebmail.hurleybulldogs.com> I found the Dovecot version was not returning RECENT counts on the inbox EXAMINE/SELECT requests. Thanks! -chuck From Michael.Redinger at uibk.ac.at Mon Feb 11 20:58:06 2008 From: Michael.Redinger at uibk.ac.at (Michael Redinger) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 21:58:06 +0100 Subject: [imp] dynamically selecting the login server (based on the user) Message-ID: <47B0B6DE.8010706@uibk.ac.at> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I had problems dynamically selecting the login server based on the HowTo "Dynamically selecting an IMAP server for authentication" (http://wiki.horde.org/ImapSelect) - eg. I experienced strange problems with the DIMP mailbox list. Also, I always thought that this method (messing with the _SESSION variable) was quite ugly. My goal was to select the IMAP server based on the user's name - similar to what is describe in the HOWTO. I now found a much simpler method - I just wanted to post this, in case anybody else is interrested in something like this: For each server you can set 'preferred' to indicate on which web server this (IMAP) server should be the preferred server. This method of selecting the server has been around for a very long long time. It was intended for situations where you use the same horde config on multiple web servers and select the appropriate IMAP server based on the web server. Eg.: $server['imapserver1'] = array( 'preferred' => 'webmail1.mydomain.com', ... ); $server['imapserver2'] = array( 'preferred' => 'webmail2.mydomain.com', ... ); When Horde is started on webmail1, imapserver1 is chosen as the preferred server. On webmail2, it is imapserver2. However, you can use (or abuse?) this as well for selecting the user based on the user pattern. In fact, this method seems much easier and cleaner than using the Horde preauthentication hook. Just use a servers.php file as follows: ###### if (!function_exists('set_preferred_server')) { function set_preferred_server($userpattern) { $user = Util::getFormData('imapuser'); if (!empty($user)) { foreach ($userpattern as $pattern) { if ( preg_match("/" . $pattern . "/i", $user)) { return $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']; } } } return false; } } $servers['imapserver1'] = array( 'preferred' => set_preferred_server(array('^A', '.*-XY$')) ... ); $servers['imapserver2'] = array( 'preferred' => set_preferred_server(array('.*')) ... ); ###### This seems to work very well for me. As you can see, the server is based on a regexp pattern. Also, the second server here is used as a "fallback" for all users not matched by another pattern. And please do not quote passages of text you are not going to comment on. In this particular issue, I guess, Horde/Imp is the wrong place to implement an autoreply: When you are out of office, you will not invoke Webmail, hence you would not trigger the reply. The right moment to reply automatically is when a message is delivered, hence the right place to implement autoreply functionality is the IMAP server, not a mail- user agent like Imp. In our shop, we provide a WWW interface to activate an automatic vacation reply; this interface will enter the time-span of the vacation, and the text for the reply, into our users? database. On the IMAP server machine, the SMTP server (Postfix) will check, via LDAP, for each incoming message, whether the addressee has activated the vacation reply, and if so, it will send a copy of the message to a home-brewn autoreply script. If you plan to implement an autoreply, you should take pains to avoid unneccessary, or unwanted, replies: do not reply, - if the sender address in the SMTP envelope is <>, - if the message is marked as spam, or as bulk, - if the message comes from a mailing list, - if the message comes from a service that will answer automatically (such as a trouble-ticket system), - if the sender has recently been notified about the addressee?s vacation (this bit needs yet another data base). If you wish to include into the Horde framework the users? inter- face for activating the automatic reply, try Sork/vacation, cf. . I have never tried it, so cannot comment on it. Or you could try to express as a Sieve script the rules from the previous paragraph, and use Ingo to relate that script to your IMAP server, cf. . I haven?t tried this either. Our vacation interface is independent of Horde, so all users can take advantage of it, both Webmail users and users of other MUAs (such as Mozilla Thunderbird). I could use the Horde module Ingo (currently I use avelsieve, because it looks better) to configure sieve. Sieve is working even without invoking the Webmail client, because it is a part of the imap server. I haven't tried it, because I have Imp and can read my mails everywhere, but you can use sieve even for an automatic vacation reply. To say that Horde/Imp is the wrong place for doing this is not generally right. Sorry that I can't help the OP. Hence, I have *not* said that Horde is the wrong place to issue a Sieve script. (On the contrary, I have mentioned this possibility, further down in my contribution.) What I have said (o tried to say), in the paragraph quoted supra, is that Horde is the wrong place to do the actual autoreplying. To put it in a nutshell: You need an autoreplying mechanism, in your IMAP server (or in the e-mail channel leading there). If you have that in place, you can, of course, trigger it from the Horde framework or from any other suitable user interface. (We have chosen to have that independent from Horde.) They have software that can put data to Imp and Squirrelmail very fast, to send mail. The software creates an identity (or is this part done by hand?), changing the sender to a throwaway free email account, like yahoo or hotmail, and loading the message text into the signature file. They usually send to exactly 100 recipients at a time, but it can be fewer. The total number of recipients can run to 100,000. I believe it would be a nice way to eliminate some innecessary mail conversations, without the need to open an IM account. If I could find a custom hook to enable a, for example, java-powered jabber client, and add the addresses to it straight from IMP's contact list, it would be a damn hole-in-one. I've been studying the possibility of creating a shared contact list within our organisation, and a Horde included IM would just be the cherry on the pie. Thanks a lot, I'll look at the link you provided in your past mail.
