I certainly tried that Craig, I even tried uninstalling acroread  
altogether and told it to open with okular... it wouldn't work.  I got  
the white screen no matter what I set FF to for opening pdf files.   
Something was frakked in the those directories I mentioned.  With or  
without Adobe brand pdf reader, it needed to be whacked.

Incidentally, it had nothing to do with my addons, I put those all  
back and it still works, so there was some obscure, stale bit of info  
in there.  I have been upgrading this profile since FF2.x, so I can  
see how something like this might happen.
