Are you sure it is "crypt" method?  I know nothing about sql password
encryption, but...

It looks more like an md5 encryption to me.

You'd either have to show me an entry both before and after a change, or
at least tell me if your debugging did actually result in a working (can
login) changed password or not, etc.
