  I get Parse error: parse error in ./templates/setup/session.lib on line 79
   on setup.php3, so i can't even begin to use the horde components :(

+ my random guess, from what you've said, is that you're using horde 1.0 and 
+ php4. that won't work - you need a recent horde 1.2 to work with php4. if
