Gmail feature -- 'snippets'

Comment by vyrus at nerdnet.org on Fri May 21 11:37:46 2004 (today):
Gmail has a feature called 'snippets' which I mentioned on the mailing list
and was told to suggest here. The basic idea is to supplement the subject in
the message list display with a little bit of the body text (around 90
characters, or whatever will fit).

[The below is just speculation. Ignore if you like.]
This seems to be most easily done using a header to store the snippet, once
generated, which breaks it down into two problems:

Easy - Display a snippet, if present (in an X-Snippet: header or whatever)
along with the subject.
Hard? - Generate a snippet, if absent. But inserting it into the message
apparently requires re-uploading the entire message, unless IMAP has a
feature I'm not aware of.

Alternately, this could be done with client-side storage somehow, but I'm
not aware if Horde/IMP has any provisions for that, and it seems less
elegant. A more elegant solution seems to be for the mail server to generate
the snippet and for Horde to just display it, but I don't know what people
would say about that, without support from the mailserver being already
present.
[End of idle speculation.]
