I am not using Alpha, but I will download it immediately and check. I think
it is safe to assume that previews are what I'm looking for, if they fit the
feature I've described. I'm uploading a gmail screenshot for your viewing
pleasure; the message snippets appear to the right of the subjects. 

[Other features worth noting in the screenshot: labels (like folders, but
you can apply multiple per message) and conversations (notice that "*****,
me (2)" is actually a set of two messages, one I recieved and the reply I
sent.)]
