I've done a little more investigation of this.

If I open a PDF attachment in IE 6, this is the URL that pops up:
http://webmail2.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/horde/imp/view.php?Horde=a00c0f77470e4

(this doesn't work)

On the other hand, the exact same attachment in Mozilla 1.7 has this URL:

875aa51929cc

Deleting the extra 'Horde=' parameter from the IE URL and resubmitting it
results in a login screen being presented.
