That was using PHP5 so i guess that could've been the problem.

I went back to 4.3.3, and it does the same thing.  It seems to know how many
new messages i have (ie it says inbox (2) then i send an email to myself and
it goes inbox (3)), but no messages are visible and it registers as empty.

could there be a missing extension?  all other functions seem to be ok.
