Going back to the original idea, it was rejected because it took up too much
screen real estate.  How about making whether or not the owner's name is
displayed with the item or not a preference?  Then you're only loosing about
three spaces by using Show/Hide instead of +/-.  My secretary was the one
that originally gave me the idea and her rationale was that you should be
able to look at the menu and it should tell you what to do.  Click To: is
pretty obvious and then your action of clicking with either Show or Hide the
specificed resource.
