Of currently installed horde packages on my system (all stable Horde
packages + few others) i did not find any piece of code which acutally uses
such serialize $mode.

and  the PEAR/xml2sql itself is not compatible with php 5 due domxml library
change. see also http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=904

so here's a patch which makes it optional ie returns false if pear package
is not installed:
