drops to sub 2 seconds on subsequent openings within the same session, no
doubt due to all the work that has gone into the caching system.

What sort-order are you using? Anything other than arrival time can hammer
performance. There is a setting to force sort by arrival time for folders
containing more than a configurable number of emails.
