Fixed, but with one proviso...

On selecting a folder, if that folder has only a small number of mails
(fewer than 9 in my case), the preview pane appears higher up the screen
than it would normally do - eg directly under the "no messages to display"
text if the folder is empty.

Switching the preview off then on again puts the pane where it should be.
