Are you using PHP 4?  Seeing as how I believe Jan uses PHP 4 and has seen
this, and I use PHP 5 and have never seen this (I can't reproduce this given
either of your scenarios) - this may be an issue with references somewhere. 
In fact I'm hoping this is the issue or else I'm stumped.
