update and tracked the problem to the imp/lib/IMP.php file. Version 1.588
works as it should, but the latest version (1.160) has the problem
described above. I have not tried version 1.589. 

Not sure if it matters, but this is in IE6, SP2. I looked through the page
source and the reply-to address is not present. In other words, this does
not seem to be a problem with escaping characters properly as reported in
a similar previous bug report.
