I have the same problem with some more info's:

This feature works for me with PHP 5.2.0 and the newest versions of
Horde/IMP/Turba. But when updating to PHP 5.2.1 I can't exand any address
(also when only one is given). Downgrading to 5.2.0 fix this. 
I don't know if this is a Horde or PHP bug.
