I downloaded imap-2007.tar.Z.
compiled imap-2007.tar.Z and copied c-client.a/so to /usr/lib
recompiled php-5.2.4
restarted http

I use courier-imap-4.1.2 and httpd-2.2.2 on fedora

I still get the same behavior. I really  don't know where to look now. Any
ideas ?
