I'm wondering if this might be handled  better as a Horde_Block? By
default, maybe display minithumbs of the first 10 or so images in the
gallery - and allow the params to override the count and also provide a
list of image ids to show?  Not that I'm against doing this as a View, just
really thinking out loud...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this.
