My mistake...
It's currently set-up as:
IMP -> courier-imap (IMAPS/993) -> LDAP (for authentication).

Other clients have no problem authenticating with IMAP (outlook,  
thunderbird, apple mail)..

Just IMP will fail when the password contains a } character
