So... this wasn't trivial, but it was doable with several hours of  
work.  And printing messages correctly is such an integral feature  
(IMHO) that this needs to be handled properly.

I have merged the code to master.  Since this is implemented, closing  
this bug.  Error reports should be in new bugs.
