Update.
I have a little more information on this issue.

I can read encrypted emails as long as they are not signed by the sender.

I cannot read encrypted emails when they are encrypted and signed in  
Outlook 20007. When this happens I get the errors I have already posted.

So the question is why is openssl in combination of php etc having  
problems unencrypting a email this is encrypted and also signed?

Do they need to be registered certs?
