For whatever reason it looks like the way you connect to the email  
server effects weather or not you can open a signed email.

I was connecting to the server via IMAP but I switched to pop3 and the  
problems went away. I still cannot open a signed and encrypted  
document but everything else works fine.

Also something I noticed. I downloaded the horde for vmware and it had  
a email server configured with it. If horde was accessing the server  
via IMAP via localhost I had no problem with any encrypted or signed  
or encrypted and signed emails. However as soon as I changed the email  
server to a remote IMAP server that is when signed emails would no  
longer open. Encrypted email would open but nothing that was signed.  
As soon as I changed the configuration to pop3 on the remote server  
everything except a signed and encrypted email worked fine.
