I disagree with the former.  I understand the latter, but strictly as  
an argument for familiarity.  e.g. The Outlook-like display is  
*familiar* to users so they like it.  But just because users are  
familiar with it doesn't mean it is good UI.

I would gladly welcome a patch to add a 'sort' menu item when viewing  
in vertical layout mode.
