As expected, IMP can access this mailbox just fine.

Your IMAP server is broken.  See (RFC 3501 [7.1.5]) (Untagged BYE  
response can occur in 1 of 4 instances: the only instance that fits  
here is "2) as a panic shutdown announcement.")  That is a perfectly  
valid FETCH statement, so the problem is not with Horde/IMP.
