This doesn't make any sense, unless you are doing something to  
munge/mangle the password/username combination in Horde/IMP.  The  
login form is identical whether you are using 'IMP' authentication or  
'IMAP' authentication. (Similarly, this has nothing to do with special  
characters since the login form is the same).

You will need to provide full debug logs (debug_raw = true in  
imp/config/backends.php) of a successful vs. unsuccessful login for a  
given username for us to begin to debug this.
