This (or something similar) will be a part of Horde_Imap_Client 2.2.0.  
  The combo of getSyncToken()/sync() should provide the necessary  
information on whether the mailbox has changed.  Not sure exactly what  
information you are caching, but most likely this function pair will  
help out at least a bit.
