Sorry - I forgot to mention:

Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS 32 bit and up to date

pear used for Installation
Apache is 2.4.7-1ubuntu4.6
PHP is 5.5.9+dfsg-1ubuntu4.13
gnupg is 1.4.16-1ubuntu2.3

openssl is 1.0.1f-1ubuntu2.15 (shouldn't be involved)
