  I type a mail message, hit send, the spell checker changes the
possibly incorrect words to red with underlines, and I can left click
these words and select their replacements from a context menu, but I
cannot simply ignore them and choose to send the message anyway.

I've turned off the spell check but this is not a long term fix.  
Please investigate.
