Using the Carddav URL  
https://example.com/horde/rpc.php/principals/user@example .com/ (the  
same URL works for contatcs and tasks without any problems), I cannot  
access contacts in OSX Mavericks Apple Contacts 8.0. Apple Contacts  
shows error message "Unable to verify account name or password".

Apache2 does not show any errors in error.log. Access log only shows:
