  ok, _still_ at this monthdayyear... more tweaks:
  - fix up the isValid() a bit, now it checks for shoddy dates even when not required
  - add an emptyDateArray to clean up the code a bit when checking for empty date arrays
  - fix up the code to return objects when objects required, strings when strings required and arrays when arrays required
  ... and hopefully now turba will work properly........
