  Log:
  - big changes in function names/location
  - most of the work is done here, with backend-specific work handed over to private functions in the backend driver class
  - here the channel type is checked and internal stories are fetched with the backend functions, whereas external stories are fetched using the fetchExternalStories() function which draws from the Horde_Cache functionality.
  - lost of cleaning up needed here...
