  Doh. "$a = null; isset($a)" returns false.  Fix that.  This may fix sorting
  of the base level.
  Add a constant for the base element string.  However, upon further review,
  this indeed needs to be 'null' (or at least the empty string).  Anything else
  breaks the javascript tree display in the sidebar.
