  Log:
  Turn on autodetection of best connection method.  Namely, this will do either
  DIGEST-MD5 or CRAM-MD5 if available and we are using a non-encrypted
  connection. Be forewarned - I don't have access to a server that supports
  either so the actual authentication is untested at this point (although I
  ripped the code from (supposedly) working code elsewhere so if broken it
  shouldn't be very hard to fix).
