  Log:
  If the date values are not passed in and not part of the request then an empty
  array was returned.  This caused warnings to be generated from the gallery/sort.php page.  Mike, I'd appreciate it if you could check this for me to make sure that defaulting the date to today doesn't break the intention of this function.
