Right. So, here's the deal:

I've gone through and applied all of these changes. I've simplified a few
things, fixed a few others, and cleaned up a few other things that were
directly related. I'm pretty happy with the results. It's a pretty nice
interface here on my laptop where I've been doing the development, and I'm
fairly sure that for someone actually used to a 3-pane interface, it'd be even
better. =)

I'll hold off on applying the changes for now, but my personal leaning is to
get it in. Several reasons come to mind:

1. I get the impression that having it in 2.4 will make a lot of people happy.
Market-/mind-share is obviously not the top priority in open source software,
but it can't hurt the project.

2. I think most of the core developers prefer the frameless interface, which
creates a bias against the change even though it can be turned off.

3. Having actually applied the changes, almost none of them were in pieces of
the code that I've had to touch recently. I'm not worried too much about
maintenance.

I'll wait until tonight (EST) at least to hear opinions. But it's all sitting
here, cleaned up, waiting, and ready. ;)
