More SSL problems with IE

Greetings,

I've tried to follow the dev lists and I did a lot of search, so if I
missed a discussion about this please forgive me.

Server Configuration: PHP 4.0.5RC6, AOLserver 3.2 + ad12 patchset,
nsopenssl 1.0 module, openssl 0.9.6.

Client Configuration: IE 5.5+SP 1 and all relevant patches from
Windowsupdate.

I've successfully installed IMP and can access mail via SSL. When I try
to download an attachment or view the source of a message I get the
following error message:

"Internet Explorer cannot download ...c90d5d from my.server.edu.
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

That hex string about is actually a lot longer.

This works fine with Netscape 4.76.

I also tried forcing nsopenssl to talk only SSLv2 as one post in the
archives suggested. That didn't help, though I am unsure if I was
successful in forcing the SSL version. I also tried changing IE's
settings for SSLv2 only, but I can't find anything that would tell me if
I was really using v2.

Suggestions?
