We could probably get away with changing the background color
around the icon or something like that (or toss a little flag
image in there).

Anyway, any solution like that would involve refreshing the Horde
menu frame.  We'd need to design some sort of infrastructure that
would either refresh that frame periodically (icky) or via
JavaScript tied to certain application events (kludgy).

Either way, that frame would have to poll some status information
from a global Horde session to which each application would be
able to queue up these event notifications.

Yup. How is that any more icky than the way that IMP currently refreshes itself 
(the mailbox and folder views) every so often? I guess it seems to me that 
having that frame refresh itself is the best way to go, and I'm not sure what's 
icky about that solution...?
