[dev] Maintenance stuff (that may have to wait...)

I commited this to the HEAD tree.
We probably shouldn't merge it into the stable tree before it was tested 
some time, it's quite a big change.

I'd say we should merge in the beginning of December, because that's after 
two weekly and one monthly maintenance starts.
