Customizing English

I can't seem to customize the English that's presented in Horde 2/IMP 3
(trying with HEAD at the moment).

As per the README, for both horde/po and imp/po I've used xgettext.sh to
generate the generic file, renamed it to en.po, customized the top and the
words I want to change, and have done "make" to create horde/locale/en and
imp/locale/en respectively.  "en" is set as the default in
horde/config/lang.php

But the words I'm customizing are still showing up as the stock text.  
Any other ideas as to what I should check?  Thanks.
