LDAP uses a big numerical hierarchical tree (just like SNMP). OID is
"object identifier" which is basically the numerical identity. Each LDAP
object and attribute name down the tree is mapped to one. Each
organization has to register a section of the tree, just like a DNS
address etc., if they want to make the schema public.

Example from an old Netscape LDAP server schema (so you can see how long
these numbers get):

# Used by Netscape Directory Server
attribute mailForwardingAddress 2.16.840.1.113730.3.1.17 cis
attribute mailHost 2.16.840.1.113730.3.1.18 cis
attribute mailQuota 2.16.840.1.113730.3.1.21 cis
attribute	mailRoutingAddress 2.16.840.1.113730.3.1.47 cis
