No, category_sql is what calls parent::updateCategory(), so the sql should
be excecuted... I don't entirely follow you, though, so I might be
interpreting the question incorrectly.

However... sorry to make this so much of a moving target, but I have some
major updates for the Category/Group stuff on my laptop; I should be able to
connect and start committing it on Thursday.
