Similar thoughts have crossed my mind. I don't think there'll be license 
issues even if we want to bundle other PEAR packages - the Mail stuff 
comes to mind, since someone brilliantly moved Net_Socket out of 
php4/pear, even though Net_SMTP, which MAIL_smtp uses, depends on it... 
someone should double-check that, though.
