Yes. However, removing it would require either:

a). Replacing all <?= in our templates with <?php echo

or

b). Adopting a wholly new template system without that problem.

I'm up for either; a). could be taken as a first step, though I know Jon 
has opposed that in the past - and it does make the templates less 
readable. But I would like to get rid of the requirement, on principle.
