This responds to some concerns/critiques Chuck was raising a few days ago 
about the amount of re-sorts done while viewing messages.  The re-sort 
triggers are listed in the phpdoc above needResort() - i won't repeat them 
here.  Let me know if this looks good.

And now that I am looking at that method name, maybe i should change it to 
needReSort().  i think we could all use a resort (vacation, that is).

Now on to tackling the indexing foolishness if new messages arrive while 
moving between messages.
