Sometimes the manual is out of date (and sometimes just wrong). You _never_ 
have to pass arguments explicitly by reference anymore.

It's disabled by default, _very_ deprecated, and I'd guess it will probably 
disappear completely in PHP5. But I don't have any official idea.
