The problem was Jonah.  I disabled it and the problem miraculously disappeared.
Chuck, without your suggestion, I don't know when I would have found it.  On
the positive side, I have a squeaky clean head installation, mysql and ldap 
containers :-)

Now the interesting question is, why?
