Before this change, people could order the applications in their menus by
changing their order in the registry. I'd like to preserve that, unless you
have a strong argument otherwise.

(adding ordering to the config class is an option, but one that's heavy on work)

(ohhh ... anyone want to write a PHP-GTK frontend to the config system?)
