well was hoping that this would prod you to take up the challenge... :)

how about just adding on to the bottom of this current image a few rows of grey
shades, and have a separate calculation knowing that below y-th pixel are greys
and they follow this calculation etc etc.?

rather than redoing the whole image/calculation algorithm?
