Hmmm... What version of procmail are you using?  Directly from the
procmailex(5) man page:

       \.        Matches a single dot; use \ to quote any of the magic
charac-
                 ters to get rid of their special meaning.

"Magic characters" are the Extended regular expression characters which
include "^$.*+?[]|()".

My procmail version:
