I did try with crypt-md5, and that didn't work initially.

But when I set the "show_encryption" to "false" for the vpopmail 
backend, things
worked just fine with crypt-md5.

I used the vpopmail backend configuration more or less straight from
backends.dist.php, so unless there's a reason for keeping "show_encryption"
enabled for vpopmail, I suggest the "example" be changed.
